Chievo’s underactive summer.

By: Mostafa | August 8th, 2009

It’s time again for managers to put on their thinking caps and play this game in real life. And once again it’s time for us fans to hold our breath and turn blue and pass out waiting for that single player that should supposedly add overwhelming depth to our squad and bring us the scudetto next year.
While other clubs have been spending their money, and getting bargain sales. Some clubs have been waiting for an opportunity, and some were scouring the youth looking for future stars, but we have had a summer worse than Roma’s.
Now let me summarise this summer from 1 June -> present day. Not surprisingly not a lot has happened.

1- Sergiooooooooo

Part 1
Our very own goal scoring machine, he’s our icon and he was going to get himself sold to Napoli

“Napoli’s interest [in Pellissier] is real,” agent Oscar Damiani told TuttoNapoli.net.

“I’ve had contact with the club in recent weeks. They know we are ready to open talks over a potential transfer, but before that can happen, the clubs need to reach an agreement.”

The striker was also questioned on his future after yesterday’s match and he admitted to being tempted by a move to the Vesuviani.

“There is nothing concrete at the moment, but Napoli are one of the most important teams in Italy,” he told reporters. “I love challenges, but it’s not just up to me.”

that was the first part of this saga.

Part 2
After that being said, Napoli seemed to lose interest, so this was said:

“For the time being I think that they’re just rumours,” explained the Flying Donkeys captain to Radio Kiss Kiss. “I know that there was some interest, but I’m used to speak only when things are for real.

“I don’t know if Napoli in these days will contact Chievo. Obviously playing with two champions like [Fabio] Quagliarella and [Ezquiel] Lavezzi is always very nice, also because with such people you can only improve.

“Quagliarella and Lavezzi would be two great attacking team-mates.”

And thus part 2 of this saga makes us feel he’s staying, but no good football rumour sould go unchecked, part 3 will raise speculation yet again.

Part 3 will get a say from an official “Sartori” our own sporting director had this to say

“Pellissier has been one of the miracles of Chievo this year. If we look at the second half of the season, Sergio was able to score 12 times,” he explained to the Corriere dello Sport.

“For these reasons we think he’ll remain a key player for us.”

Napoli have expressed plenty of interest in the Veneto-born hit-man, attempting to lure him to southern Italy.

“If we get a significant offer then the company will assess it. Napoli has offered us €10 million? Nothing is official. Right now, I couldn’t even establish a price tag for the player.

“I will reveal that last year, [Chievo] president [Luca] Campedelli refused a good offer from Genoa that included [Marco] Di Vaio and cash.”

Part 4

Everyone was looking to get into the picture, the agent apparently went to Florence to visit his relatives, not to sell Sergio, but the Napoli link was renewed.

“Yesterday I was in Florence only to say hello,” he said.

“Fiorentina aren’t looking for Pellissier but someone similar to [Alberto] Gilardino. The Viola have not made an offer, but Napoli have offered nine million euros.”

Still in part 4 where we finally get a clue as to when this saga will end.

“I only know that there are requests, but I must evaluate the situation,” explained the Flying Donkeys’ captain to Sky.

“I hope to speak with president [Luca] Campedelli, but I know that he does not want me to leave. I will decide calmly after the holidays.”

Part 5:

The grand Finale, we get what we want to hear, Napoli wanted him, but apparently didn’t have enough for him.

“Roma never asked us Pellissier,” declared the Flying Donkeys director to Teleradiostereo.

“The only contact with other clubs for our attacker arrived in Lega between president [Luca] Campedelli and [Napoli president] Aurelio De Laurentiis.

“However, the Napoli president was informed that our attacker is not for sale.”

    Kerlon

, our very own Brazilian.

This is from goal.com:

The Nerazzurri signed the diminutive striker from Cruzeiro last summer, but were unable to register him as they had already filled their quota of non-EU players.

Therefore, Chievo stepped in and registered the former Brazil Under-20 star as one of their men, a ploy that Inter had already used in the past for Julio Cesar and Victor Obinna.

Kerlon struggled to make an impact at the Bentegodi due to injury problems last season, collecting just four appearances. Therefore, the Clivensi have opted not to retain his services for next campaign.

He will probably start pre-season training with Inter but is unlikely to stay put in Milan, probably being loaned out again to earn more experience.

Kerlon suffered a serious knee injury in March 2008, undergoing cruciate ligament surgery, which has severely hampered his progress over the past year.

So thats that. I think we are almost “Sans Brazil”

Other…. Transactions:
Well they are mostly players escaping Verona
V.Italiano –> Padova
M. Diagouraga –> Modena
I. Fatic –> Genoa

New Kits!
Surprisingly off topic :D

    Stefano Goalkeperino;

Another transfer saga that was interesting to hear about, was the possibility of him moving to Roma, He said time and time again “I would move to Roma in a heartbeat”, but apparently there was no offer, so he later said that he will remain in Verona. Anyway I didn’t emphasize that saga, because it is more or less unimportant.
I am aware he is our starting GK, but still not as important as Sergio.

Summary

Well, I think it’s safe to say whomever is managing Chievo now… Can’t play Football Manager very good. Untill the Next post!

I will leave you now with a video that speaks for itself.

    Can’t say I agree that we haven’t done much…

*Ariatti and Granoche add some real versatility.

*Holding onto Frey & Rigoni (delicate co-ownership deals), renewing the contracts of Yepes & Marcolini, and reacquiring Pinzi were all incredibly important.

*For a club our size to have such a remarkable ritorno round and not lose a single starter from the bunch (particularly from the defense) is remarkable. As far as notable contributors, only Italiano and Colucci left.

We’ve got a solid team that (unlike last year) will start already knowing their strengths and abilities. I’m really excited!

Well italiano was good actually, and i while i agree that the Co-Ownership deals are delicate but still mind you, we only just survived last year. We had a real good second half of the season, and that is good omen, but can we continue our streak?

Anyway thanks for your review, and keep visiting..

Moving on, I think that there is no way our team can get any half decent players, since our team position doesn’t allow us to have the $ to spend like the big boys on Serie A.

As long as this team retains most of the players from last year, I will be happy. They just need to play together and get experience playing together. From that, wins will come.

As far as Kerlon is concerned, I am not shocked that he didn’t pan out with our team.

    Forza Pelliser :D

Chievo’s summer market was much like the rest of them, quiet and waiting for good deals, as Mostafa said above. I was sad to see Italiano go to Padova. He’s a great player and was critical during our rise back to Seria A. I’m still not sure why we let him go. And last year we let Cesar go to Padova, too. What is the deal? What have we gotten in return for having given them two excellent players? Weird.

I hope we keep Bentivoglio. He has a 5-yr contract and Di Carlo better utilize him. He’s top class and has been demonstrating great form in this pre-season. PLEASE don’t give him away.

This pre-season was pretty good. Adequate challenges against decent teams, and not one loss. Bodes well for 2009. Usually Chievo has pre-seasons that don’t offer challenges – aside from an annual visit to the UK, they prepare with Serie C (or lower) teams – Lumezzane and other such crap teams… I’ll never forget their preparations in 2005 for the Champions League prelims against Levski, I think they played against San Zeno. Please! Someone explain that strategy…

I’m optimistic for this season and look forward to seeing the games on justin.tv or other live steaming sites.

Also enjoy reading the comments above. It’s good to see a unique team like Chievo has fans in the US.

Don’t get me wrong, Mostafa, you won’t see me saying that Italiano wasn’t good :) Dude got us 5 extra points BY HIMSELF with those late goals in both games against Reggina and at Torino. It’s just that he’s wanted out since March and we already knew he was dissatisfied… nothing short of firing Di Carlo and bringing back Iachini would have convinced him to stay.

Happy to contribute, and thrilled to find a place for my fellow Chievo fans!
